Designing for a compact urban site, Kitty Lee Architecture collaborated with Partridge and Sea Breeze Projects on a terrace house redevelopment that retained the original worker’s cottage and added a concealed two-storey rear extension. Our structural solution enabled a spacious four-bedroom home and self-contained studio within a tight inner-city block. Slender steel portal frames provided lateral stability while maximising interior space. A complex steel beam arrangement supported a large cantilever and the balcony’s curved form, with the privacy screen doubling as a load-bearing roof support. Additional steel framing supported the studio’s roof garden and curved brick parapet, all concealed within cavity walls and a shallow roof to maintain generous ceiling heights.
