PROJECT South West House

ARCHITECT Killing Matt Woods

BUILDER Green Anvil Co.

LOCATION Tempe, NSW

Partridge, as structural engineers working with architect Killing Matt Woods and builder Green Anvil Co, transformed South West House, a heritage residence in Tempe. Our structural design enabled a new lightweight second story and improved spatial flow. To support the new level without extensive strengthening, we used laminated veneer lumber for the timber construction. This approach reduced loads on the existing masonry walls and footings, aligning with the project’s low-impact goals. A key design feature was the curved awning. To ensure stability, we concealed steel stiffening members and box-section outriggers within the awning profile, tying them back into the roof structure with a curved steel channel beam. By providing tailored, cost-effective structural solutions, we helped achieve the architect’s vision without compromising the original building’s integrity.
