Off Avoca Street, between Sydney CBD and the coast, lies an 8,000-year-old Aboriginal hearth discovered during excavations at the new Prince of Wales Hospital Acute Services Building. Archaeological findings indicate Indigenous evidence by the discovery of these stones. Partridge worked with Tilt Industrial Design to design a structure which would ensure the safe long-term storage of these significant objects. A year-long dehydration process was applied to the hearth stones before displaying them under a glass dome supported by a steel frame. Surrounding brass artwork is set on a precast concrete disk. Light gauge galvanized steel wire mesh was used for the disk’s sleek profile, incorporating lifting ferrules for installation. The dome, sealed for preservation, is displayed in the hospital’s forecourt, honouring the Bidiagal people of the Dharawal Nation.
