PROJECT ZZ Top House

ARCHITECT CplusC

BUILDER CplusC

LOCATION McMahons Point, NSW

Partridge delivered the structural design for a complex renovation and expansion of an 1884 Victorian terrace in McMahon’s Point. The project, on a deep, light industrial site, included a rear studio above a four-car garage, navigating tight constraints and the need for open internal spaces. Inspired by ‘zigzag’ and ‘geode’ concepts, the architecture featured soaring cathedral ceilings and intricate detailing. Partridge engineered significant solutions, including a large steel frame for an open-plan living area by removing ground-floor load-bearing walls, and tailored systems for double-height wall stability. A zigzag steel frame supported courtyard glazing, while cranked portal frames added outdoor drama. Much of the structure remained exposed, requiring close collaboration to harmonise engineering precision with architectural expression and heritage.
