Partridge is in collaboration with Naturform in designing and certifying a steel walking track and lookout in Wollert, Victoria. The project presented a unique challenge as due to the cultural significance of the site to the traditional owners, no excavation was permitted. This constraint ruled out the use of traditional footing systems for the lookout.

To overcome this obstacle, Partridge proposed a novel solution – fixing the structure directly into the basalt outcrops. However, this approach required careful consideration. A site scan was conducted to identify suitable rocks capable of supporting the load and remaining stable over the structure’s lifespan. This process also influenced the alignment of the ramp, which was adjusted to accommodate the available rock formations.

Another significant challenge arose from the material incompatibility between the chemical anchors, designed for concrete, and the rock surface. To address this issue, Partridge drew inspiration from an unexpected source – rock climbing forums. By analysing data on anchor performance in similar conditions, our team was able to ensure the bond strength would be sufficient for the project.

To minimise on-site construction and maximise the structure’s longevity, the steel ramp was fabricated off-site and craned into place. This approach also allowed for optimal corrosion protection through galvanisation.

By adhering to the design requirements set forth by the council and traditional owners, Partridge has successfully designed a structure that integrates with the natural environment. The lookout, situated within a new estate overlooking a nature conservation reserve, offers a valuable amenity for the local community while respecting the site’s cultural heritage.
