The Sydney Metro Waterloo Station, a new three-storey facility by John McAslan and Partners, opened in late 2024 as part of the Sydney Metro City line. Partridge was engaged by mili mili on behalf of Aboriginal artist Nicole Monks to design the steel framework for a mirrored triangle wall façade and fixings for a 16 x 24 metre series of cast aluminium footprint sculptures with an electroplated finish. One key challenge was the limited embedment depth of 30mm for the footprint art fixings, which fell short of standard code requirements. To address this, onsite pull-out tests were conducted to verify the actual capacities of the fixings. Additionally, the artwork required blast load resistance, necessitating larger steel frames and stronger fixings to meet safety standards. Despite the challenges, our design met both artistic vision and engineering needs, creating a striking and sturdy installation.
