Working on a steeply sloping site is always an adventure, and this alteration and addition project was no exception. From tricky access issues to unexpected ground conditions, the challenges kept coming. But with a strong collaborative effort between Partridge, Horizon, and Design King Company, we turned these obstacles into opportunities to demonstrate creative design and practical problem-solving.

Accessing the lower half of the property was one of the first hurdles. The steep terrain and the existing house’s footprint made moving equipment and materials a logistical challenge. To tackle this, we partnered with Horizon to design transportable elements and implement strategic modifications in terms of materiality and member sizes. One key solution was cutting through the existing tennis court slab to allow machinery access. This required careful planning and placing concrete joints to maintain access throughout the build. It was a practical way to keep the project moving smoothly.

Another challenge came when unexpectedly low rock levels near the boatshed forced changes to the retaining structures. Working closely with Design King Company and Horizon we developed a phased approach to safely support the excavation while minimising disruptions to the site and surrounding areas. This teamwork ensured the build’s integrity and kept the project on track.

Perhaps the most challenging aspect was accommodating two sewer lines crossing the site, both directly beneath the proposed pool area. Supporting a heavy pool structure without compromising the sewer infrastructure required some innovative thinking. Our solution? A bridging design that provided the necessary support while maintaining clearances for access to manholes. This included a fully cantilevered corner of the pool, a striking feature that adds to the design’s appeal. Coordinating closely with the builder and architect was crucial to achieving this outcome.

In the main house, sustainability played a big role. By preserving much of the existing steel roof framing, we reduced waste and environmental impact. However, this came with its own set of challenges, as it limited design flexibility. Careful assessment of the existing structure’s capacity, roof depths, and support points ensured the new elements integrated with the old. Collaborating with Design King Company, we also designed bespoke steelwork and detailing, including cruciform caps that blend seamlessly into the ceiling of the walkway. The balustrades and steel-framed stairs added both function and style, enhancing the overall design.

The proposed inclinator’s long, sloping path introduced additional complexity. With varying rock depths along the incline, we had to create site-specific foundation solutions. By working closely with the builder, we adapted to the conditions on-site and developed designs for each foundation. Careful coordination ensured support locations were optimised, considering the surrounding buildings, landscape, and ground levels.

Situated in a bushfire-prone area and near water, the site required structural elements designed to endure harsh environmental conditions. To meet these demands, we specified durable materials, including hot-dip galvanisation for the boat ramp’s steel framing and copper for the roof. This ensured long-term durability and suitability for the environment, protecting the structure against the elements.

This project was a true team effort, with everyone involved bringing their expertise and creativity to the table. It was rewarding to see the result is a thoughtfully designed space that meets the site’s unique challenges while enhancing its natural beauty, and reminds us why we love what we do.
