We are excited for the official opening of the newly refurbished Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Galston, NSW, the extensively renovated aquatic centre benefits from clever design and detailing at every corner. Supported by the NSW Government through a Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund grant, these enhancements include the installation of a new roof and the addition of several amenities, changerooms, rehabilitation and accessibility facilities including hoists. Our team at Partridge worked closely with the architectural team and builders to ensure the ongoing structural safety of the aquatic centre.
The comprehensive refurbishment project involved intricate structural changes, featuring a refurbishment of the existing concrete swimming pool and the construction of a new ‘bow-string’ timber and steel truss roof structure. The main trusses, spanning over 20 metres across the width of the swimming pool, were constructed with nearly half a meter deep glulam timber beams, working compositely with a steel tension rod system.
To address manufacturing and transport constraints relating to the glulam beams, a meticulous splice connection was implemented. The splice detail involved 40 steel pins epoxied through the timber and steel splice plate on site. The collaboration between steel and timber fabricators, alongside the structural and architectural teams, showcased precise coordination through 3D models to ensure a perfect fit on-site and alignment of the tight-fit holes.
Furthermore, the concrete columns supporting the ‘bow-string’ trusses, standing at over 9 metres high, were cast insitu. Temporary propping was required for the columns until the roof framing and bracing were installed, providing permanent lateral restraint to the columns. This careful planning and execution underscore the dedication to delivering a modern and family-friendly environment that caters to the diverse needs of the Galston community.
Congratulations to all involved in bringing this remarkable project to fruition.
