The Allan Border Oval Pavilion is a landmark clubhouse for the Mosman community. Its expressed structural elements demanded creativity and innovation, resulting in a building that clearly demonstrates the project team’s successful collaboration.
The building features a monolithic concrete base at ground level and a lightweight steel-framed roof. The first-floor slab was architecturally requested as an exposed structural element, requiring careful detailing and reinforcement design to control cracking.

The most striking feature is the seven-meter cantilever canopy roof, achieved through a truss-like frame supported on steel columns. A significant design challenge was anchoring the back end of the truss onto a slanted concrete beam. Welded steel truss frames were designed to be cast into the concrete and provided lateral cross bracing for the building in combination with sufficient hold-down strength for the cantilever.

All roof steelwork is expressed at the ceiling level, requiring careful design of beam connections to meet architectural and structural requirements- continuity through the connections was necessary to ensure adequate lateral bracing was achieved along the long axis of the structure. Close collaboration between Partridge, the architect, and steel fabricator resulted in elegant, fully bolted details that minimised the risk of damage on-site and offered a sustainable installation approach-timber and steel elements can be more easily disassembled and recycled.

Allan Border Pavilion demonstrates quintessentially honest structural engineering and architecture, with no room for error within the off-form concrete and expressed steel framing.
