Ballina Shire Council has now completed the new pump track and community precinct at Kingsford Smith Reserve, enhancing more than 20 hectares of parkland near the Richmond River and North Creek. Designed to national competition standards, the facility includes a main track, junior track with advanced alternate line, spectator hardstand, shelters and supporting amenities.

Partridge was engaged to provide civil, hydraulic and structural engineering services, designing the stormwater infrastructure, water supply and structural elements that underpin the precinct. Working alongside Boyds Bay Group, landscape architect New Eden Design and specialist pump track designer Velosolutions, our role focused on integrating robust engineering solutions within a sensitive waterfront environment.

Given the site’s proximity to tidal waterways, water management was central to the design approach, applying water-sensitive urban design principles to manage runoff, mitigate localised flooding risk and protect downstream water quality. Rain gardens and bioretention swales were incorporated into the landscape to treat stormwater prior to discharge, while structural detailing ensured durability in a coastal setting.
The completed facility provides competition-level riding infrastructure supported by carefully considered civil and hydraulic systems, forming part of Council’s broader strategy to strengthen community recreation assets while safeguarding the surrounding environment.
