White Bay Power Station

November 24, 2025

Partridge engineers Ronnie Ho and Matthew Ross recently attended the trial tours at the White Bay Power Station, organised by Engineers Australia (Engineering Heritage Australia). Both will be volunteering later this year to help share the site’s unique history with the community.

Built in 1917, White Bay Power Station once powered Sydney’s trams and industries, its harbour-side location chosen for coal deliveries and cooling water access. It remained in operation for almost 70 years, with its final electricity output recorded on Christmas Day, 1983.

Unlike most power stations worldwide that have been stripped and repurposed, White Bay is rare as it still retains much of its original machinery and structure, reflecting four major stages of technological and architectural change throughout the 20th century. Listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2006, it stands today as a remarkable survivor of Sydney’s industrial past.

As part of the tours, each group of up to 15 visitors will be guided by a volunteer tour guide. Ronnie and Matt will be stepping into these roles to help connect visitors with the engineering legacy of White Bay, and keeping the spirit of engineering heritage alive.
