Partridge is proud to have played a key role in the structural engineering of the Surf Living Club and Amenities building in South Maroubra. Working alongside Melocco & Moore Architects, our team focused on delivering a robust and resilient structural design for the single-storey building, ensuring it meets the demands of its coastal environment.
The building’s structure is anchored by an off-form reinforced concrete (RC) roof slab with decorative off-form banding, supported by load-bearing masonry walls. This combination provides a solid and durable framework, essential for the building’s longevity. The RC ground floor slab further reinforces the stability of the structure, offering a strong foundation to withstand the challenging conditions typical of coastal areas.
The use of pre-cast concrete wash basins in the amenities area underscores the material’s durability and adaptability. These prefabricated components contribute to the overall structural integrity while allowing for design flexibility.
Incorporating perforated breezeblock walls was another strategic decision that balances structural needs with environmental considerations. These walls enhance natural light and ventilation, which is critical for maintaining air quality, while also providing necessary privacy.
Given the challenges of building in a coastal environment, such as exposure to salt spray, wind, and erosion, our design process included careful attention to protecting the exposed concrete elements. This focus on durability ensures that the building will withstand the harsh conditions and continue to provide durable, safe and convenient amenities for the enjoyment of the local community.
