The Somerville Park Sports Pavilion is a modern amenities facility in Eastwood designed by Sam Crawford Architects for the City of Parramatta.

This project presented unique challenges in its foundation design due to complex ground conditions characterised by highly reactive clays over weathered shale, compounded by existing buried services. Our team worked closely with the geotechnical consultant to ensure a solid foundation that supports the structure’s longevity and safety.

The pavilion’s roof structure incorporates fine steel UB beams with double cantilevers extending up to 2.6 meters, supported by slender CHS columns. To maintain the clean aesthetic of the transparent roof cladding, we eliminated roof cross bracing in certain bays. The roof is designed to appear as if it hovers over the supporting walls, leaving space for ventilating screens, which aids in natural ventilation for the change rooms and amenities below.

This design not only provides effective weather protection but also allows natural light and airflow. By working closely with the architectural team and other consultants, we ensured the roof integrates seamlessly with the surrounding pavement and a nearby barbecue shelter, also designed by Partridge, enhancing both functionality and user experience.
