Furniture design and fabrication isn’t typically where you’d expect to find structural engineers, but at Partridge, our expertise extends far beyond concrete and steel. Our first principles approach to engineering equips us to tackle diverse challenges, including architecturally designed furniture. An ambitious piece installed in the public domain, like the reception desk at Sydney Living Museum’s CBD premises, demands more than conventional joinery.

This striking desk features a flared, convex, and corrugated hardwood veneer façade, minimal footprint, and an open elliptical layout, all supported by a hidden steel frame and ballast. Constructed off-site, disassembled, and then craned into position, the final piece seamlessly integrates into its surroundings, with no visible joints.

This project exemplifies the close collaboration between joiners and engineers, meticulous attention to detail, and the fulfilment of a demanding architectural vision, featuring the beauty of Australian Hardwood in an innovative form.
