Artist: Mika Utzon Popov
Designer: Urban Art Projects
Location: Richmond, VIC
Mika Utzon Popov, a Danish-Australian artist and grandson of Sydney Opera House architect Jørn Utzon, draws inspiration from his global upbringing and his grandfather’s legacy. His life, spanning Denmark, Australia, and Mallorca, fostered an appreciation for the interplay of light, space, and nature, deeply influencing his artistic vision.

Illuminate is a three metre tall sculpture consisting of two curved bronze elements located in the central foyer of Eco Outdoor’s flagship showroom. The design features a rough, patinaed exterior contrasting with a polished bronze internal void, embodying the theme of dichotomy.

Working with the artist and the UAP team, Partridge helped to ensure the sculpture’s safety, stability, and durability within the showroom environment. This involved the creation of a finite element analysis model, taking advantage of the inherent stability of the curved geometry. Close collaboration with the UAP team ensured that the fabrication and installation processes were carefully considered and integrated within the structural design. By minimising structural intervention, Partridge was able to preserve the artist’s original vision while maintaining the sculpture’s integrity.
