That mindset underpins Alan Dowling’s approach as Senior Associate at Partridge, where he leads the Newcastle office.
Alan’s career has been shaped as much by time on construction sites as it has by time in design offices. With more than 20 years’ experience across Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, he brings a working knowledge of how buildings come together in practice, not just in documentation. It’s a perspective that consistently informs his input on projects, particularly where coordination, sequencing and buildability are critical.
He trained in Ireland, completing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at the Dublin Institute of Technology, alongside further qualifications in structural and civil engineering. Early site-based roles established a strong technical foundation in construction methods, which continues to influence how he approaches detailing and problem solving today.
Alan works across a wide range of sectors including residential, commercial and industrial, with experience in concrete, steel, masonry and timber structures. His portfolio includes education facilities such as the MTEC campus in Muswellbrook and civic infrastructure like the Windale Library in Lake Macquarie, as well as high-end residential projects and industrial buildings along the New South Wales coast. He has also collaborated on sculptural installations with artist Nicole Monks, requiring a different level of precision and adaptability in translating artistic intent into stable, buildable form.
In leading Partridge’s Newcastle office, Alan maintains a close connection to both clients and project teams, with an emphasis on clear communication and timely delivery. He is a Chartered member of Engineers Australia and listed on the NPER register, and brings a steady, solutions-focused approach to each stage of a project.
Rather than overcomplicating structural systems, Alan’s work is defined by clarity, by resolving constraints early, coordinating closely with the broader team, and ensuring that what is designed can be delivered efficiently on site.
