Location: Hurstville, Sydney

Located within a busy transport hub, Interwoven demonstrates the level of coordination required to realise public art in a demanding environment. Completed in April 2023, the installation was developed through collaboration between Lawrence Liang Public Art, Ali Megahed and Tilt Industrial Design. We congratulate the artists for winning the Outdoor Light Art Installation category at the Lighting Design Awards.

While the concept is visually light and relatively straightforward, the structural engineering role was to ensure that this simplicity could be delivered as a safe, durable and buildable outcome within a constrained and highly trafficked setting.

The installation comprises LED neon tubes arranged in a suspended, interwoven formation, supported by a concealed aluminium and steel framework. Each illuminated line traces connections, such as roads, rail and waterways, across the Georges River region. A programmed lighting sequence cycles through representations of past, present and future and adds visual dynamism. The supporting structure is intentionally recessive, but still requires clear load paths, practical connection detailing and sufficient stiffness to maintain alignment of the lighting elements.

The structural system adapted to the existing structure whilst still maintaining the artist’s vision for the installation, the structural engineer enables the installation to read as simple and unobtrusive, while performing reliably in service.
