PROJECT The Glasshouse

ARCHITECT Cracknell + Lonergan

LOCATION Castlecrag, NSW

Partridge delivered a structural condition assessment of the heritage-listed Glasshouse at Castlecrag, a mid-century residence celebrated for its dramatic cantilevered form and lightweight hybrid steel–timber structure. Supported by a central braced steel core anchored into the sloping rock face, the house projects outward to appear suspended within the bushland canopy. Using a detailed Spacegass model, we assessed the structure under current load criteria and identified key serviceability and capacity issues, particularly relating to vibration and long-term performance. We worked closely with the client, builder, and heritage architects at Cracknell + Lonergan to develop a strengthening strategy that preserved the original architectural intent. The solution introduced three discreet, rock-anchored steel posts beneath the primary trusses, providing targeted support to improve stability and reduce floor vibration, while avoiding impact to the occupied spaces and maintaining the defining character of this significant heritage home.
