Congratulations to Pacific Plus Constructions as winner of the 2025 Master Builders Association Award for Contract Houses in the $5.5–$6 million category for the Highview Residence in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. This project presented a number of structural challenges that demanded an integrated and thoughtful engineering response.
Partridge provided structural engineering services for this bespoke residence, collaborating closely with the architect Genton and builder to resolve several complex construction details. A defining feature of the design is the steel framing arrangement supporting the first floor, including a large rear span where a column was used to suspend the first-floor beam from the roof structure. This solution maintained the open plan and uninterrupted glazing at the rear of the house.
The use of off-form concrete was central to the architectural intent. A cantilevered tapered edge runs the length of the ground floor, while polished concrete topping slabs were carefully folded around the structural edges to achieve a refined finish. The exposed concrete soffit also forms the internal ceiling, requiring detailed reinforcement design around recessed lighting and door tracks.
Additional structural features included a green roof pergola, cantilevered precast concrete stair treads, and a custom folded brass plate façade supported by aluminium battens. Each element was engineered to balance visual lightness with structural performance, delivering a result that integrates strength and design precision.
