Partridge was proud to work with David Campbell Building, winners of the Master Builders Association Excellence in Building Award for Home Units over $4M, on the Moruben Road residences in Mosman. DCB had an outstanding night and also took home the award for House Alterations and  Additions – $1 Million – $1.2 Million (in collaboration with Partridge), Home Unit Renovation – $3 Million & Over AND Best Use of Timber Award.

Designed in collaboration with Peter Tout Architect and Turner Hughes Architects, the two homes are terraced into a steep hillside, requiring careful structural solutions to bring the design to life.

The site demanded excavation of more than 3,000 tonnes of soil and rock, including a 10-metre-deep lift shaft and tunnel. Partridge developed an approach that relied on temporary batters and vertical rock cuts, removing the need for shoring piles. This simplified the excavation process while keeping the works safe and efficient.

With the ground prepared, reinforced concrete slabs were supported on load-bearing masonry and Dincel walls, allowing for robust yet efficient construction. Above, a lightweight steel and timber roof structure was designed to achieve 3-metre double cantilevered canopies, enabling a slender 150-millimetre eaves profile in line with the architect’s intent.

A key feature of the project is the central stair. Finite element analysis software was used to minimise structural depth while supporting the architectural vision. The stair comprises a steel box stringer with cantilevered steel plate treads, each supporting a glass balustrade engineered to cantilever from the plates. The result is a refined feature that combines structural clarity with visual lightness.

The Moruben Road development reflects the close collaboration between Partridge, Turner Hughes Architects, and David Campbell Building, with structural design solutions that addressed the steep site and delivered a highly resolved outcome.
