Galway Winners

The University of Galway buzzed with creative energy as Partridge Director Eamonn Madden led 250 first-year engineers through the “Creative Response” assignment. This annual event, now in its seventh year, blends engineering with artistic expression. The winners were recently announced, and it is with great pleasure that we share their work.

The week began with Eamonn’s lecture and studio session, challenging students to capture the campus’s “essence” through photography, fostering a fresh perspective. Two days later, they faced a three-hour studio challenge: translating emotional responses to curated images into A3 black-and-white artworks.

Supplied with canvases and brushes, students navigated form, texture, and emotion. The studio transformed into a space of focused creation. with students expressing their interpretations visually. Subsequently, they wrote 150-word essays to explain their artistic choices. This process was designed to encourage students to consider the connection between analytical and creative thinking.

The program concluded with the completion of the student artworks and accompanying written pieces. Below are the artworks created by winners Hannah Nic Fhlannchadha  and Donal McDermott.
