The Boot Factory

June 25, 2025

Congratulations to Archer Office and Waverley Council on receiving the John Verge Award for Interior Architecture and the Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture at the 2025 NSW Architecture Awards for The Boot Factory and Mill Hill Centre Precinct. Partridge was proud to provide both structural and hydraulic engineering services for the adaptive reuse of the heritage-listed Boot Factory, now a civic innovation hub in the heart of Bondi Junction.

Our hydraulic team supported the project from concept design through to construction documentation and delivery, with a particular focus on stormwater management solutions tailored to the site’s heritage context.

Our involvement began with an inspection and assessment of the existing drainage network servicing the site, aimed at determining the most suitable stormwater management plan tailored to the future use of this unique and character-rich development.

From there, we developed concept proposals that respected the existing character of the site while integrating modern standards and regulatory requirements. These proposals provided the necessary support for the architectural team to navigate the complexities of designing within a heritage context.

Throughout the design stages, we collaborated closely with the architect and structural engineering team to develop stormwater drainage solutions for both the Boot Factory buildings and the forecourt area, making sure they aligned with the architectural vision and character of the site. We also took care to confirm that existing public infrastructure was thoroughly considered and not adversely impacted in any way.

The final deliverables, including detailed plans, construction details, and ongoing support for the construction team, provided the necessary information to install a fully operational system that would service the site and its future patrons.

The final outcome is a thoughtfully crafted public space that not only respects the heritage character of the Boot Factory site but also enhances it. The stormwater management system has been integrated into the landscape and built environment, supporting the site’s functionality without detracting from its visual appeal. By aligning technical performance with architectural sensitivity, the system effectively blends into the background—contributing to a space that is both beautiful and resilient for the community to enjoy.
