Partridge provided structural engineering services for the transformation of South West House, a heritage residence in Tempe, located in Sydney’s inner west. The project, led by architect Killing Matt Woods, aimed to give the building a refreshed, modern look while maintaining a sense of warmth and visual depth through a restrained materials palette. The architectural approach was supported by structural interventions that enabled a new upper level and improved spatial flow, while retaining the historic fabric of the home.
Our scope included the structural design for a lightweight second storey, supported above the retained single-storey masonry structure. The strategy avoided extensive strengthening works by favouring timber construction over steel or concrete. Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) was used throughout, helping reduce overall loads on the existing walls and footings while aligning with the project’s low-impact construction goals.
A key structural feature was the curved awning wrapping around the new façade. While visually understated, it required detailed resolution to resist torsion and maintain overall stability. Steel stiffening members were concealed within the awning profile, with box-section outriggers cantilevering from hidden steel columns located within the wall cavity.
Internally, the structural design supported open-plan spaces shaped by curved transitions and framed views. A curved timber window integrates exterior geometry into the interior, improving natural light and enhancing continuity between old and new elements. The use of natural materials and textural finishes contributes to the warmth and clarity of the final outcome, with the structural framework enabling these design moves without compromising the integrity of the original building.
